چکیده

Giant cell arteritis is an important cause of blindness in the elderly. Often vision may be lost because of a delay in diagnosis. The commonest ophthalmic presentation is anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy with optic disc pallor and swelling; also recognised are diptopia, occlusion of the central retinal artery, and amaurosis fugax.' These, in the presence of an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate or plasma viscosity, require prompt steroid treatment. We report on two patients with unusual presentations in whom the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis was delayed, resulting in blindness.

Histopathologic Features of Giant Cell Arteritis in an Actinic Granuloma Lesion

The association between actinic granuloma and giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis) has been claimed by some authors. There is a hypothesis that actinic radiation has the principal role in the etiology of both diseases in a similar way. Here, we report a case of actinic granuloma that had characteristic pathologic features of giant cell arteritis in histopathologic examination without clini...

Abnormal radionuclide liver scans in giant cell arteritis.

In the investigation of six patients with giant cell arteritis and abnormal liver function radionuclide liver scans were found to be abnormal in all. The abnormality may be due to arteritis of hepatic vessels. It is important to recognise that giant cell arteritis may cause liver scan abnormalities. If other pathology is suspected and corticosteroid treatment delayed while further investigation...

Does herpes zoster predispose to giant cell arteritis: a geo-epidemiologic study

Purpose Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common systemic vasculitis in the elderly and can cause irreversible blindness and aortitis. Varicella zoster (VZ), which is potentially preventable by vaccination, has been proposed as a possible immune trigger for GCA, but this is controversial. The incidence of GCA varies widely by country. If VZ virus contributes to the immunopathogenesis of GC...

Evaluation demonstrated bitemporal tenderness, elevated ESR, CRP, leukocytosis and positive PANCA. Stranding and abnormal enhancement of right retrobulbar fa...

Polyarteritis nodosa presenting as temporal arteritis in a 9-year-old child.

A 9-year-old Haitian girl presented initially with monocular blindness and an isolated temporal arteritis, confirmed by angiographic studies and temporal artery biopsy findings. CT and MR studies of the intracranial circulation showed only an enlarged, dense superficial temporal artery. Systemic workup revealed a mildly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mild changes in white and red bloo...
